Tony Lupo: High Resolution 3D, Sequence Stratigraphy Delineate New Tight Oil Play"
Abstract: Tight sands in the Upper Pennsylvanian Cleveland Fm are an active development target in the panhandles of Texas and Oklahoma. Since drilling started in the 1920’s along the Nemaha Ridge of north central Oklahoma and south central Kansas the Cleveland has traditionally been viewed as a shallow 2,500’-3,000’ depth, thin, tight-oil “teaser” or tertiary objective on the way down to other more economic objectives. By integrating high-resolution 3D seismic with detailed sequence stratigraphic analysis, thicker, productive Cleveland reservoir fairways can be identified and economically drilled on the Nemaha Ridge. Cleveland depositional systems in the Nemaha Ridge area include river-dominated deltas and incised valleys, each with distinctive log and seismic characteristics. Deltaic reservoir successions occur in the upper two thirds of the Cleveland interval and are usually the best reservoirs. The deltaic reservoir units are composed of very fine to fine-grained sanding upward successions exhibiting dip-elongate behavior and rapid changes along strike. Cleveland valleys in the study area are blocky to fining-upward, lower medium to very fine grained units that occur in the lower part of the Cleveland succession. Optimal drilling locations are best identified by fine-scale correlations and seismic mapping, linked to subtle syn-sedimentary tectonics. High-resolution 3D seismic (up to 1.4 million traces per square mile) and seis-facies analysis has proven a key tool in differentiating and predicting optimal reservoir trends in this new play concept on the Nemaha Ridge and sets up and opportunity for focused horizontal exploitation. This type of analysis is broadly applicable to a number of other similar plays in old development areas. Bio: Mr. Lupo has 13 years of oil and gas industry experience and currently works at SM-Energy on the Corporate Exploration Team evaluating new play entries and supporting a nascent exploration drilling program. Prior to joining SM-Energy, Mr. Lupo worked at Cimarex Energy in the Cana Woodford and Gulf Coast teams developing new play ideas, supporting the development program and mentoring young geoscientists. Prior to Cimarex Mr. Lupo was V.P. of Geophysics at Fossil Creek Resources where he was responsible for the entirety of the geophysical program including play fairway mapping, 3D acquisition design, seismic processing QC and advanced interpretation. Before joining Fossil Creek, he worked with Samson Resources where he helped establish the acquisition and interpretation technologies currently in use by Samson Resources for various deep gas plays that were a significant component of their E&P portfolio. Also at Samson, he build the groundwork for the horizontal Woodford and Wapanucka Limestone gas plays as well as integrating 3D seismic into their directional drilling program. Lupo began his career at ConocoPhillips working with various assets teams including West Africa, GOM, Alaska, and the Mid-Continent focused on interpretation, rock physics, seismic acquisition and high resolution processing, particularly in the Mid Continent where his efforts bumped their key stratigraphic play success from 15% to 80% and identified several previously undocumented plays. Recognized by COP for his integrative skills he worked in the Integrated Geologic Analysis Group bridging COP’s applied research with all of their operating divisions. Mr. Lupo holds a B.S degree in Geology from Grand Valley State University and a M.S. in Geophysics from New Mexico Tech.

News from the Board - by Denise M. Stone The Houston SIPES Board met on March 21st. Discussion during the meeting centered on improving member ser-vices for the coming year through technical talks, special events and continuing education. Chapter Chair Dick Bishop welcomed Jim Tucker who has agreed to serve as Technical Program Chair for the coming year. Many thanks to outgoing chair Wulf Massell for a fine job and bridging until a replacement could be found. Chair Bishop attended and spoke praise for the Ohio Oil and Gas Association meeting which was organized by SIPES member Pete McKenzie. Reporting for Treasurer Jay Moffett, said that the chapter has $113,082 in the treasury and is in good financial health. Chair-Elect Jory Pacht is continuing his efforts to plan a fall 2013 camping trip for the chapter to Inks Lake State Park. He has had a favorable response from the Boy Scouts about sharing of equipment, particularly use of tents, lanterns and stoves for the weekend. His next step will be to secure a number of campsites at Inks Lake. Chair-Elect Pacht moved that the SIPES Houston Chapter exchange advertisements as appropriate for upcoming events with the Houston Association of Petroleum Land-men (HAPL) in their respective newsletters. This was approved by the Board. The American Ground Water Trust Conference was attended and praised by board members Jory Pacht and Scott Daniel. It was a well-run conference and the key-note speaker was geologist Don Clarke from California. Jim Allen announced that Board Member and National Director, Ralph Daigle is the new Vice President of SIPES National. Congratulations, Ralph. In addition, Jim Allen has been elected Director of the SIPES Foundation. Board members Jim Allen and Kara Bennett (Public Relations) and Lafayette SIPES member Bill Finley are teaming up to formulate a plan for local outreach efforts by SIPES. The key to this effort is to assemble information in the form of PowerPoint talks that SIPES members can access easily and present to community groups in schools, churches, Scouts, etc. Kara also announced that three framed geological maps of the US will be presented soon to local schools. Thanks to Jeff Lund for his continuing efforts. SIPES member Jeff Allen is working to develop new content for the monthly Newsletter. At present he wants to feature regular articles about local geoscience students. The ongoing effort to improve and keep the website current is being led by Chair Bishop and Web Committee Chairman Phil Martin. Three priorities have been set to improve member services: 1) to use a credit card online for lunch reservations, 2) to use a credit card online to pay for Continuing Education meetings, and 3) to promote and encourage connections between deal buyers and sellers. Ross Davis (Hospitality) announced that the March 21st lunch meeting wine sponsors are the Gulf Coast Geo-logical Library and Southern Star. Many thanks to these organizations for their generosity. Membership Chair, Nina Delano, led a Board discussion about the lengthy six months it now takes for a new membership application to be reviewed at both the national and local level. Hans Sheline, Political Affairs Chair, in an attempt to speed up the process, moved that local member benefits should be extended to new applicants once they are approved locally. This would include member discounts for lunch tickets and receipt of the monthly Newsletter. This was approved by the Board. An application for full membership by Kent Brock, was approved by the Board. His name will be submitted to National with a recommendation for full approval if no objections are received within 30 days.
